Having worked in the financial services industry for a while, I find this programme very relevant as it not only focuses on core skills required in banking technology and operations but also provides participants with a good mix of general and financial management skills. The faculty members delivering the courses are also able to engage us interactively. This active participation allows us to relate theoretical and practical aspect of the courses better.

The course projects also challenges us to think beyond what we have learnt and this practical approach further enhances our learning. The series of MITB seminars, delivered by industry experts, allow us to gain further insight into the various financial services domains. Conducted in a specialist business IT school like School of Information Systems at SMU, the Master of IT in Business (Financial Services) course has proven to be true to its promised form. Lectures are conducted professionally and with a clear business focus. I have also found content in the courses to be aptly complimented with the experience of the lecturers. To add to the value of this course, there are seminars that are being organised for this course to introduce key industry players in the FSI to the course participants. While this may not make experts of the industry out of us, it does provide a vantage point from the eyes of experienced executives to help us gain perspective on the industry.

From what I have experienced so far, one can gain two things from this course: First, an accelerated understanding of IT in the context of FSI that cannot be gained from books alone. In stating this, I am eliminating self-study as a possible alternative to taking this course. Second, a true understanding of the role of IT in business can be gotten from here.

While most of the courses will be taught in the context of the FSI, it should be noted that the knowledge gained is quite possibly applicable across industries. As one of my illustrious classmates pointed out recently, there might be a misconception in thinking that IT in FSI is different from other industries. But of course, that is something we have yet to thrash out. All the more to look forward to in the coming months.

Strolling a term ahead, MITB was glossy to navigate and professors covered the subjects in depth. We had a great team and made terrific case presentations, I have certainly benefited by the rigor I had to go through. The knowledge taken away from course was very satisfactory as it explained me the need to analyse the kinds of situations we encounter and forced me through thinking process from each of those experiences. I am hoping to utilise this course to refine myself as an entrepreneur while looking forward to unravel the mystic world of financial negotiations.
