For over four decades, the ideas and initiatives of Nicholas Negroponte have influenced the way people interact with digital media. Through his pioneering and sometimes controversial efforts, he has made the world aware of the implications of “Being Digital”, of the possibilities of New Media, and of the opportunities for changing the way people learn.
In 1985, he and MIT President Jerome Wiesner co-founded the MIT Media Lab. The Media Lab awakened the world of business, as well as consumers across the world to the potential of digitally enabled New Media.
In 2005, Media Lab Faculty members and Negroponte created the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) Non-Profit Organization to help address the learning and educational needs of the millions of poor and disadvantaged children on the “wrong side” of the digital divide. The OLPC organization emphasizes that “It is not a laptop project. It is an education project.” As chairman of the OLPC organization, Negroponte has worked tirelessly to champion and make real the vision of putting transformative technology in the hands of those who needs it most.
Please join us at this special event where Professor Negroponte will share his perspectives and reflections on his journey to eliminate poverty using the One Laptop per Child as a vehicle to achieve his vision. After his talk, there will be an opportunity for Q&A and informal networking amongst like-minded people after the event.
