Note: Job roles adapted from the Business Week, “Software: Will
           Outsourcing Hurt America’s Supremacy” article (March 2004, pgs 84 – 95).

The Business Week article (pg 86) highlighted six job categories in “the software
pyramid,” and ordered the pyramid by salary. We have added two categories (#2 and #6),           and we have positioned  the placement of job categories on the horizantal axis           according to scope of  the job.

All of these types of jobs exist within  end-user organisations, e.g. within the financial institutions, the retail companies, the supply chain & distribution companies, the hospitality and entertainment companies, the media companies, the hospitals and healthcare providers, etc.  In addition, all of these types of jobs also exist within the technology, solution and service providers that serve and support the end-user organisations.

Our BSc (ISM) programme will also provide you with the  foundations for job roles #5 and #6 shown above. All of our students need to understand software,  how it is used to create business applications, and the realities and risks of designing and implementing software solutions.

For those who will pursue professional careers more related to job roles #1 - #5 above, you still need to know enough about the "software guts" inside business solutions, and what is required to create and change these solutions, in order to effectively carry out the problem solving, decision making and risk management  that is central to job roles #1 - #5.

For those students who want the capability to enter into job roles #5 and #6  for their internships, or as their first full time job, our programme enables you to develop and build your skills for creating Business IT solutions through a combination of core courses, elective courses, enrichment workshops, projects and internships. You can do this even without any prior background with IT or software development! And if you have prior experience in these areas, we can take you well beyond your current capabilities.

For those who want to pursure further study after their bachelors in either a professionally oriented or research oriented post-graduate programme, our BSc (ISM) degree, along with your second major or double degree,  will provide you with a very solid foundation, especially for research areas 8b, 8c, and 8d.

The BSc (ISM) creates Business IT professionals who can contribute in high value added ways to all phases of an enterprise process improvement and IT projects. Our graduates can take on business analyst or technical analyst roles with the business end users, or with the technology consultants and service providers. Our graduates are in high demand even when a business end user outsources projects. Why? Because Business User firms need Business IT professionals to plan & manage outsourcing efforts. And outsourcing service providers also need Business IT professions who understand the processes, systems and needs of the business user customers.
