Students in the MITB (Financial Services) Programme are required to complete and present a major Capstone Project as part of the curriculum.
The Capstone Project is an integral part of the MITB programme where each student is required to complete a project sponsored by an industry partner. The project enables students to apply and integrate what they learn, and gives them an opportunity to explore in greater depth, one or more of the topics covered in the courses.
Mode of Work
Students work on the projects individually, in collaboration with a sponsoring company, under the supervision of an SMU appointed advisor. In cases where the project scope is large enough to allow for the involvement of more than one student, two may work on the project provided each student makes a distinct contribution towards the project.
Students may be expected to work on-site at the sponsoring company's premises if necessary. This may help them in understanding the business domain, problem definition and even in gaining access to information systems, documents and resources available within the company. An allowance may be paid to the students for their work, at the discretion of the company. The work arrangement may assume the form of an internship with the sponsoring company.
Strictest confidentiality is maintained between the sponsoring company, the students and SMU advisor. Prior permission will be sought from the company before the use of any information, in any way, such as for presentation and report purposes.

Project Duration
Students are expected to commit a minimum of 182 hours each to their Capstone Projects. This includes meetings and consultations with the company representatives and SMU advisors.
The duration of the project depends on whether the students are completing the MITB (Financial Services) Programme on a part-time or full-time basis.
For full-time students, the Capstone Project must be completed within their one year of full-time study.
To facilitate this, all classes in the MITB (Financial Services) Programme are conducted on weekday evenings and on Saturdays, leaving the office hours free for students to undertake projects. Hence projects which require on-site presence at the sponsor's premises are most suitable for full-time students.
Full-time students must complete 4 courses each term, which entails a substantial amount of out-of-class assignments and projects. It is thus strongly recommended that on-site commitment for the Capstone Project be between 25 to 30 hours per week.
Part-time students spend two years in the MITB (Financial Services) Programme and typically start their Capstone Projects within their first year of study, completing it during their second year.
Part-time students usually hold full-time employment and complete 2 courses per term. They are typically able to commit to meeting their sponsors once every 2 weeks to report progress, while most of their work will be done away from the company's premises.
Projects which are less time sensitive and do not require the students to work on-site will be more suited for our part-time students.
