IT grads with business bent wanted by banks
Banks both local and foreign have taken a hit in the financial meltdown but they remain keen on hiring, especially information technology graduates with a business bent. The trend has been noticed by faculty members at SMU's School of Information Systems, where banks have been asking for the curriculum vitaes of students. And SMU SIS Master of IT in Business (Financial Services) programme is proving the right course for the times.

Simulation Whiz Kids
Three SMU students proved their mettle in business strategy in a cyber simulation game, making it into the GLO-BUS Hall of Fame. The students who formed two companies - Digi Life and Ebson - stood out for their best financial performance. They were crowned Best-Strategy Invitational Grand Champions in December last year, competing among several foreign universities. Andy Yeo, a postgraduate student pursuing the SIS Master of IT in Business (Financial Services) managed Digi Life.

A master first for SMU
SMU is the first local university to roll out a new master's degree programme to groom talent for the growing financial services industry. The pioneer batch of 22 postgraduate students embarked on the inaugural Master of IT in Business (Financial Services) course. SIS dean Professor Steven Miller said: "A unique aspect of this programme is that it is co-designed and co-delivered with financial services organisations and the supporting vendor community. These deep connections with the industry mean that the curriculum will always be relevant and responsive to emerging trends."
