BSc (IS Management) Overview

The BSc (IS Management) Programme is built upon three foundation pillars, namely:

  • Foundations and applications of information systems technology and information systems management in the context of business.
  • Exposure to complex, real-world business problems and processes. We teach you IT in the context of business by using numerous real-world business scenarios in course discussion and assignments.
  • Cross training in business, management or social science areas through foundation, core courses and electives offered by the other SMU schools, and through 2nd major options.
BSc (IS Management) Programme, 3 Foundation Pillars

The BSc (IS Management) Programme is shaped by industry and academic leaders who understand the forces of global change and the essential skills needed to leverage IT in business settings.

Students without prior experience in information systems will be guided through the paces by faculty and peers as they gain entry into this new area of study. For students with IT and software experience, our BSc (IS Management) Programme is designed to further stretch and develop your interest in this area.

Above all else, the BSc (IS Management) Programme sets our graduates up with skills and knowledge that are applicable across different management areas. Our professional training and preparation is designed to expand career options, enabling our graduates to become Business IT professionals with long lasting, transferable skills.

Freshies 'On Board' Year 1 Experience

The basic IS Foundation Courses, SMU Foundation & Core Courses would enable you to:

  • Explore the components of real world applications (e.g. Online Cinema Booking System)
  • Learn Java programming skills, along with other basic IS concepts such as data management, in the context of some real world applications
  • Build management, leadership, communication & presentation skills
  • Create IS solutions within business settings

Here is some information on your first year Information Systems courses:

Term 1
IS101: Seminar on Information Systems Management
  • New case studies on key issues in business-IT leadership and management
  • Updated presentation topics to reflect current trends in business and technology
  • Mix of qualitative and quantitative peer feedback for student-facilitated activities
  • Enhanced use of wiki-based collaboration tools, both in and out of the classroom
  • Visit the IS101 wiki for more course information, team pages, writeups and presentations
IS200: IS Software Foundations
  • In the previous year, Alice 2.0 (an interactive tool for teaching programming) was used to introduce our students to the concept of object oriented programming. This year, we decided not to use it. Instead, additional time is spent on Java assignments and projects. More time is devoted to introducing Java gently and gradually.
Term 2
IS201: Object Oriented Application Development
  • Web development concepts will be covered to prepare students for the IS203 Software Engineering course in Year 2, Term 1
  • To teach our students about how to design applications, we use real-life examples and walk them through the process
IS202: Data Management
  • Real life applications used as course projects
  • Example projects include designing and implementing databases to support all the key functions of Golden Village E-Ticket Booking System, American Airline Online Booking System and Channel News Asia
  • A discussion forum was set up to share learning experiences, solve common issues, and extend class discussions
  • Database designs with common mistakes heavily used for criticism to reinforce the understanding of key concepts
  • Check out some course project samples which includes the database designs and the interface of a web-reporting systems
