New postgrad scholarships to boost local IT skills
WDA has allocated around $1 million to fund 24 postgraduate scholarships for Singaporeans working in the IT industry. The scholarships will be tenable for the Master of IT in Business in Service Sector Analytics and Master of IT in Business in Financial Services at SMU, and Master of Computing at NUS. The scholarships will fund up to 90% of course fees.

Singapore to groom IT security experts

Analytics is still in its infancy in Singapore and although the technology is available, skilled local talent is not. That skills shortfall posed a key challenge to Singapore's progression to the next stage of evolution as a knowledge economy; but SMU is changing all that. Tackling the talent shortage
SMU is working with software firm SAS to develop the curriculum for a new course, Master of IT in Business (Service Sector Analytics) to help build up new IT skills such as in business analytics to meet the talent shortage in Singapore. Students will use SAS' solutions to work on real-world challenges through a joint advanced analytics laboratory set up in SMU. NUS' Business School, Nanyang Polytechnic and Republic Polytechnic are also working with SAS to teach business analytics.

Scholarships to be given to potential leaders in new fields
The Education Minister announced yesterday that scholarships tenable at the universities here will be given out to Singaporeans with the potential to become leaders and professionals in various fields, especially emerging ones. IDA scholarship holder Kevin Chia who graduated from SIS with bachelor's and master's degrees under an accelerated programme at SMU and Carnegie Mellon University in the United States, was able to take up internships with IBM in Singapore and overseas before starting out as an official employee, and found the overseas exposure and networking opportunities useful.

In brief - New IT research unit at SMU
A new research facility at SMU's School of Information Systems to develop city-wide IT systems was launched yesterday by SMU and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). The facility will receive $6 million in funding from TCS over the next three years, which includes about 10 postgraduate scholarships to be awarded to SMU students each year.

Grads' starting pay back to pre-crisis levels
The Ministry of Manpower's latest annual report on wages found that among those in four-year degree programmes, information systems management graduates from SMU commanded the highest average starting salary of $3,474 last year. They were followed by SMU economics graduates at $3,430.

Record employment rate for SMU grads
With an almost full employment rate of 99.99 per cent, SMU's 2010 graduates achieved the highest employment rate and average gross monthly salary for all degree programmes across all local universities, excluding medicine and law. (SMU's top earning graduates are from its IS Management programme.)

It was a year for SMU's 2010 graduates in terms of employment and pay. Of all the degree programmes, SMU's Information Systems Management graduates topped the salary band, followed by its economics graduates. SMU also announced yesterday that it has launched a new graduate degree in corporate communication, in collaboration with Switzerland's Universit? della Svizzera Italiana and the UCLA Anderson School of Management in the United States, touted as the first of its kind in Southeast Asia.
