It pays to be a geek!

Olivia CHIU Cheuk Ning
BSc (IS Management), 2006 entry batch
Double Degree in Bachelor of Business Management

"Having blessed with job offers from a government authority, 2 local banks, an investment bank and a consulting firm for a vary of roles ranging from Corporate Banking to Operations to Strategy, I finally settled with Accenture in Global Markets & Management Consulting. Out of these offers, 3 resulted from connections formed during my internships. While doing 5 internships during my university education deprived me of long holidays and exchange opportunities, I knew that building up a good network was very important.

SIS is more than a school to me. Other than learning practical knowledge on how IT links with business, SIS trained me to think faster on my feet (very helpful for

interviews), to manage long working relationships with group mates, and to survive the toughest of deadlines. On top of that, Professors were always helpful (my dean even offered personal advice in choosing among my job offers), and my peers, having gone through so muchtogether, stays together like glue. Having come from a JC background, choosing SIS was an almost crazy decision at that time. But I am very very glad that I was crazy and gutsy enough to make that decision.

Making the SMART Choice

3 SIS students received the $50,000 SMART Explorer Grant to take their IS480 project to the next level in Feb 2010, after enduring months of anxious waiting.

Their brainchild is Baboonza Collaborative Search (www.baboonza.com), and it has come a long way, from being merely an idea to its current working state. The journey wasn't smooth sailing and co-founder Steve SNG wasn't very optimistic about landing the grant after pitching to the SMART committee back in December 2009. Without any funding, the online collaborative search application that Baboonza envisioned would never materialise. Thankfully, the team's impressive IS480 prototype proved to be a great testimony of their ability to deliver the end-product, and the team was finally awarded the grant 3 months later to realise their vision.

Steve and fellow year 4 SIS students Timothy TAN and David CHUA have since being working feverishly to refine the application and prepare it for beta. The team is also mentored by Prof. Benjamin GAN (Practice Associate Professor of Information Systems, Singapore Management University) and Mr. Gerald TOCK (Director, Nabi Studios), faculty mentor and catalyst of the team's SMART Explorer project respectively.

Follow Baboonza on Twitter (twitter.com/baboonzasearch) for updates on the project's impact on the way people perform search online and its effort to create an online culture of collaboration between people.
