BSc (IS Management) Updates

Freshies 'On Board' Year 1 Experience

Exciting Happenings in the Seminar on Information Systems Management (IS101) Course

The Seminar on Information Systems Management introduces students to the role of information systems in creating and capturing business value in an increasingly "flat" world. In contrast to ISSF, this course focuses on management issues in information systems. The course addresses four main themes:

  • The transformational power of IT
  • Building blocks of information systems
  • Managing IT for business value
  • The changing IS landscape

Cutting across these themes, the course draws attention to the way information systems are shaped by their business context, with a focus on differences among industry sectors, countries, and cultures.

Learning through Wiki Technology

Students will co-develop a course wiki as an information resource and a way to extend learning beyond the classroom. The wiki will be used for students to share course materials and post qualitative feedback on each class session. You will learn the same markup language that powers Wikipedia to exchange ideas with your peers.

As shown in the diagram, you will use the wiki to reflect on the concepts and principles you absorb during each seminar session, as well as to explore these topics in greater depth. The professor will also use the wiki to post information and respond to questions, as well as to improve the seminar sessions based on student feedback.

Look at the Wiki Knowledge Platform for our Seminar on Information Systems Management course.

Enhancements to the Information Systems Software Foundation (IS200) Course

This course is the first introduction to computing programming and has been carefully designed to take into consideration the following:

  • Gently paced introduction to programming concepts with lots of hands-on labs
  • Visual examples to aid student learning
  • Out-of-class instructor support to help in the revision and reinforcement of concepts and labs

Enrichment Course JUST for the Freshmen

Launch of introductory Java enrichment course for incoming students (SUN SL110)

The SUN SL110 “Fundamentals of the Java Programming Language” enrichment course is a 5-full-day professional course offered by Sun Microsystems, and SMU has a partnership with Sun to offer the same course to our students. It is highly recommended for incoming students who:

  • have some programming experience some years back, and want a hands-on refresher
  • have no Java programming background and want a gentle introduction before commencing the SIS foundation courses such as Information Systems Software Foundation (ISSF) course.

Enrichment courses are optional and do not count towards credit for the BSc (Information Systems) degree. It is one of the means through which SIS provides additional support for student learning beyond the official courses. It is highly recommended that students who are not confident of their Java skills attend this enrichment course.

Tailored specifically for the new batch of freshmen, SL110 is conducted from 6th Aug, 10-13th August 2010. Registration will be done at the Academic Briefing is on a first-come-first-serve basis. More information about enrichment courses is available here.
