Entrepreneurship at SIS and SMU
SIS students are especially active in pursuing entrepreneurial opportunities through SMU.
See examples of people and projects here.
SIS Practice Professor Desai Narasimhalu heads up many of the Entrepreneurship Initiatives for SIS as well as for SMU overall.

"SIS students are very active in the SMU BIG, SMU Ventures and Athena Innobator. An example is SIS alumnus Leonard LIN (Batch 2003) who started Tyler Projects. The company is generating revenues to the tune of about US$1000/- a day. SMU is set to expand Innovation and Entrepreneurship activities in the new academic year. Many of the SIS students will have an edge over many other students in SMU and other universities to avail of this opportunities and build interesting companies that make a difference to this world."

SIS students have more and more opportunities to gain immersive experiences with start-up companies and to work with leading entrepreneurs in Singapore.
Four of our SIS undergraduates have the opportunity to work at XID Technologies Pte Ltd, a Singapore start up firm founded by Technologist and Entrepreneur Roberto Mariani.
Read the testimonials below to experience the thrill of working in a small, entrepreneurial start-up environment.

"I have been working in XID Technologies for over 5 months now. It has been a
really exciting 5 months for me, developing the Face Theater website
(now known as Tycoona) and the opportunity to work with colleagues from
various nationalities and backgrounds. As XID Technologies is a small
start-up company, I have had the wonderful opportunity to work very
closely with the upper-level management as well.
Looking back at the experiences I had in SMU, much of the lessons I have
taken with me to the working world from the seminar rooms, assignments
and projects have made my working experience in XID Technologies no
lesser than the best.
From a usually quiet individual who seldom
expresses himself, the nature of the SMU courses has thrown me into
active participation, and here in XID Technologies, much of that is
greatly required of me.
I have also realised the power of being crossed-trained and having the
knowledge of both Business and IT when we have development
meetings with the IT and marketing managers. The terms and jargons used
during these meetings came clean to me, as though I have been using
them for years!"

"I'm Thin Zar Aung, an SIS student in my senior year at Singapore Management University (SMU), currently working as a part-time web developer in XID Technologies, involved in developing Tycoona social networking website (formerly named Face Theater). I am mostly taking care of the Event Management, Forum and migrating from Face Theater to Tycoona.
Being a member of XID, I have learned more about real-life projects and found out more about my capabilities. Experiences from school courses (e.g. Software Engineering, Architectural Analysis and IS Application Project) and other SIS and SMU projects have helped me a lot in working with XID’s projects. My school experiences come in handy when we have to gather user requirments, present my ideas during team meetings and when I need to critically analyse the user requirements and transform those into their dreamed systems.
It’s a challenge for me working at XID because this is my first experience in applying PHP, MySQL and Apache hands on. With kind assistance and advice from my superiors, I gained a lot of knowledge on using these software languages, related tools, and applications. Even though I had a hard time catching up with my team mates at first, I enjoyed working with them as I was treated like a close friend and colleague. This made it more comfortable for me to approach them with questions. XID has a solid team of both highly experienced and accomplished IT people who are willing to go that extra mile to help me when I am in need or have difficulties.
Yes, I really do love working in the start-up company XID as I get to know everyone within the company, the seniors welcomed us like a family, and I also get to perform various roles which enable me to gain more experiences."

"I'm Myat currently helping XID for a start-up social networking site FaceTheater.com, which will be soon renamed as Tycoona.com. I'd like to share my joy and excitement of this fast-paced self-driven role in XiD.
Being part of a start-up company is one of the most exciting things I can have in my life. It opens up many venues for me to explore, research and apply all I've learned from SIS experiences so far. Freedom to design and develop the whole site is something like a dream-come-true for me. Thanks to SIS modules such as, Seminar on Information Systems (IS101), I could easily catch up with real world solutions and approach many situations in a more logical manner. Moreover, I'm even surprised by myself easily blending into the a dynamically changing culture of XID.
It's been a great pleasure to share my experiences with you.

Check out the encouraging message from the Founder of XID Technologies himself,
Dr Roberto Mariani.

"What I love the most, beside the excellent competencies of these SIS students, is the spirit and freedom of these talented individuals. XID is so proud to be able to attract students like them.
They do not arrive here with a closed mind, many times rigidly structured by the educational systems in which they have been trained. They come here with the desire to achieve great goals, to express themselves and to be challenged everyday. Now combine this ease of professional integration with excellent technical capabilities and you can imagine our joy to know and work with these students.
As a metaphor to belong to the XID's culture, we love to say: "Before they come here they were carrying the SMU Tattoo on their skin, now they also carry the XID Tattoo on their skin."
