“The road to success invariably becomes easier for a person with the right managerial and soft skills. Today the world has become a much smaller place that it can be likened to a global village. Companies world over are going global, thus people you meet today could be your future clients or colleagues. Thus to be successful, exploring international markets is a must. Being an IS student, I have learned that it is very important to be prepared for present and future trends in the various industries. International conferences are one such platform that gives you the opportunity to interact and network with experienced leaders, key industry players and students from different parts of the world. SIS has fully supported me in the two overseas conferences I have attended so far by helping me overcome my financial constraints to attend events of such a large scale. The soft skills and the knowledge I have gained from such experiences will go a long way in helping achieve my career pursuits.”
Conferences attended:
Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2006 (San Francisco , USA)
INNOVATE 2007 (Beijing , China and Bangalore , India)
Harvard Project for Asian and International Relations (HPAIR) Business Conference 2007 (Hong Kong) Business-IT Events
To further enhance our "Beyond-IT" BSc (ISM) curriculum, SIS organises and hosts many Business-IT events for the benefit of our students.
iX Conference 2007 - Academic Forum
SMU SIS is the academic partner for the upcoming iX2007 Conference, the annual trade-conference for the infocomm community, in June 2007. This year's theme is Convergence, Collabration and Creativity.
In conjunction with this event, SMU's School of Information Systems hosts an Academic Forum that brings together some of the great international speakers that are in town to address the iX Conference, and makes this event available for free to students and faculty.

Student Enrichment Courses
SIS conducted an
expanded
range of enrichment activities for undergraduates in 2006/07. During the term break in December 2006, our instructors conducted two concurrent runs of the "Fundamentals of the Java Programming Language" course and the pilot run of the "SUSE Linux Fundamentals" course. A half-day seminar by architects from Microsoft was organized to a full-house of 45 participants pertaining to real-world case studies of software systems architecture to complement the Architectural Analysis and Software Engineering modules.
During summer break this year, a whole gamut of enrichment courses was organized for undergrads at nominal or no charges. Courses conducted/to be conducted include: a 5-day C++ workshop by Asst Prof Cheng Shih-Fen, a 2-day Enterprise Grids Primer by Visiting Assoc Prof Anindya Datta, two concurrent runs of the "Java Programming" (using Sun Microsystems-authorized material) course, the "SUSE Linux Fundamentals", "SUSE Linux Administration" and "SUSE Linux Advanced Administration" courses (using Novell-authorized course materials), a 3-day Project Management course, Oracle e-business introductory tutorial, an ILOG workshop and an ASP.NET workshop just before the new term starts in August.
Undergrads were naturally glad to be exposed to a wide range of different technologies at minimal costs.

"I went for the Sun Java Programming course conducted by SIS Instructors Swapna and Joelle and I think everyone should do that course mainly for the excellent one-on-one teaching and the reading material provided by Sun. It is amazing and covers everything in a very concise yet thorough way!"

Two new special interest groups were set up over the past year:
1. The IDM (Interactive Digital Media) SIG was formed to enable SMU students to experiment with new and interesting technologies in the IDM space.
2. The IT Audit SIG was set up by a group of students who aspired to be IT audit professionals. The society plans to reach out to the student community via a web portal and a monthly online IT-Audit magazine that tracks the latest trends in the industry.
The other SIGs were also abuzz with activities for the past year.
The Object Oriented Programming Society has been conducting several technology events with Sun Microsystems to demonstrate Java development applications such as NetBeans and the Visual Web Pack to SMU students and faculty. In addition, the society successfully organised the Sun University Day event on January 12th 2007. The SIG has also been running courses for students on Ruby-on-Rails (an exciting new web development framework) over the past term. Future plans include conducting a Sun certification preparation course, as well as activities to promote other object-oriented languages to the SIS community.
The Open Source Software Society (OS3) collaborated with CICC (Center of International Cooperation for Computerization) to organize the very first AOSS (Asia Open Source Software) Trainers Workshop conducted in Singapore from September 11th to 15th, 2006. OS3 organised the Software Freedom day on October 27th, 2006 during which an Installfest was conducted to assist SMU students in installing and using the wide range of open source software applications. The Open Source Evangelist (OSE) group was also formed to spread the knowledge and spirit of open source software to other educational institutions. A web portal was set up to enable members to have "hands-on" experience with how open source software can help manage online information. Members were given 100MB of online disk space hosted at http://os3.sg and open source blogging and e-commerce applications were made available.
dotNet Society was setup with the purpose of educating students about technologies available under the Microsoft Suite. Its purpose is to inform and to assist the students in learning these new products for both their school and personal needs.
dotNet Society has been active in and out of SMU. It organises several talks on Visual Studio and Office 2007. It has also managed to gain interest from the students regarding the technology. It sent 3 teams for the Microsoft Challenge Cup, and a few teams for Microsoft Imagine Cup. One of the members of the club has also played a key role in Vista and Office Campus tours which have reached to over 20,000 students from all of the campuses.
