Accomplishments of PhD student, Danny OH

IDA Adaptive Enterprise@SG project

Danny OH
Student, PhD in Information Systems
School of Information Systems
Singapore Management University

Danny OH, PhD in Information Systems student, wrapped up the research work for the IDA Adaptive Enterprise @SG project under the supervision of Practice Professor Steven Miller at the end of February 2007. In this project, we saw how one type of economics-inspired method for grid computing resource allocation has performance and economic benefits to the base case of allocation that is not economics-inspired. However, the former method in the form of a bidding mechanism requires a high degree of user participation in the bidding process. People who play the markets for a profession or as a hobby might be able to appreciate the trading-like characteristics of Tycoon. Engineers and technical people who want an efficient way to execute their computer jobs might not relish this need to be a trader to get their work done in grid computing settings.

The project generated several publications and the project findings were presented at various conferences as listed below in chronological order.

1. Presentation by S. Miller and N. Hu on "Analyzing Demand Patterns, Business Models & Governance to facilitate the growth of Grid Services in Singapore" at the 2nd International Workshop on Grid Economics and Business Models, GECON 2005, Seoul, Korea, in conjunction with the 13th Global Grid Forum.

2. D. Oh, S. Miller and N. Hu, "Experimental & Empirical Perspectives on Grid Resource Allocation for the Singapore Market", In Proceedings of the 3rd International Workshop on Grid Economics and Business Models, Singapore, Singapore, May 16, 2006, pg 13-23.

 3. D. Oh, S. Miller, "Economic Performance Analysis of the Tycoon Market-based Resource Allocation System for Grid Computing", In Proceedings of the 5th Workshop on e-Business, Milwaukee, WI, USA, Dec 9, 2006.

4. D. Oh, S.F. Cheng, D. Ma and B. Ravi, "Designing an Experimental Gaming Platform for Trading Grid Resources", 2nd International Conference on Design Science Research in Information Systems and Technology , California , USA , May 13-15, 2007.
-The experience with this project led us to devise a new approach for studying grid marketplaces which is summarized in this working paper. While the effort to design this new simulation platform to study the behaviour of a grid commodity marketplace is outside the scope of the AE@SG project effort, we wanted to acknowledge how our AE@SG effort led to important new areas of investigation.
