Together with globalisation, good knowledge in both business and IT is significant to an organisation's growth. This is the reason why I chose to pursue a degree in Information Systems Management with SMU. The courses indeed have laid a strong foundation for me, especially now that I am a business analyst with DFS, and able to appreciate how an organisation adapts to changing environment. Apart from the courses, the faculty and peers also played key roles during my student life. With just a mere few years, I had opportunities to work with different people, from different cultures, and backgrounds in countless projects that brought a whole new dimension into my life. While in DFS, where I work now, meeting people from different walks of life has been a norm and until now I am still very excited over the potential experience I could continue to get from this opportunity. While others find it hard to learn interacting with people, it is part of everyday life in SMU, the best training ground one can ever find.

"Coming into SIS was a turning point in my life. I have never expected the countless chances that the school had given me. I got to explore and grow my potential and pursue my dreams."

I am currently a year 3 student moving up the year 4 when the term starst. I am previously from Nanyang Polytechnic and have been working for three years before I decided to return to my books. SMU has been my first choice due to its course offerings.

Coming into SIS was a turning point in my life. I have never expected the countless chances that the school had given me. I got to explore and grow my potential and pursue my dreams.

In the course of my study, I was given the chance to be a teaching assistant. I got to experience the joy of teaching the juniors and also at the same time fulfill a childhood dream of being a teacher. During the process of teaching, it has help to improve my communication skills and also deepens my understanding of the topic and it had pushed me further than I could on my own.

I am also very glad to be part of the team in starting up the Standard Chartered iLab@SMU which is an initiative between Standard Chartered Bank and SMU. I was involved in two exciting projects in the lab which has really allowed me to bring classroom to the working world. I had to think in terms of how I could bring technology to assist the business. We have adopted a slightly different approach of starting an IT project. We initiate projects to the business instead. The team has to go through the process of convincing some business units to support the ideas and tried to develop a prototype based on any additional requirements the users had. It was a really good experience for me working in the lab as it has given me a chance to lead projects and to always bear in mind the business aspect of an IT project. I also begin to appreciate what the school has prepared me for and truly understand what it really mean to be a Business IT professional.

Being awarded the DFS scholarship after 2 years into my course was really a bonus and an encouragement to me. It was a sign of affirmation for the effort that I had put in for my studies and my contributions to the school. Being awarded the scholarship has also allowed me to work with the leader in travel retail. I was involved in two different projects and played different roles in my short stint. The experience of trying out different roles and involved in the companies key project was really beneficial for me. I really gained a lot both in term of my technical knowledge and also understanding of the business side of the organisation.

I have always believed in balancing both school work and student life. I am involved in SISS, the student society of SIS, since I was in year 1. This is a club that represents the SIS students, aims to create a closely knitted community, and focuses on the welfare and growth of the students. Being involved as the Finance Secretary during my term of service as the executive committee has really been a fantastic experience for me. It has taught me to place my fellow students and the school as my priority. Given the responsibility of holding on to the purse string of the club has allowed me to manage the funds and controlling the budget and spending of the whole club. I also realized the power of working as a team and that everyone was playing an important role in the whole game.
