1. Update on SIS Internship Results for 2006
During this "summer period" between May and August 2006, over 66 companies are employing 130 SIS students as interns, exposing our students to really interesting opportunities and projects. 25 of these firms took on two or more SIS students. This demonstrates that if you are indeed passionate about studying both IT and Business (or Accounting, Economics or Social Science), and you are willing to do the hard (and fun!) work needed to develop both types of capabilities, you will have more opportunities than you ever imagined. The 66 firms who are employing our students this summer are listed here, in alphabetical order.

2. Standard Chartered Bank-SMU Innovation Centre is officially announced.
The Centre's Innovation Lab is sited at the School of Information Systems.
On 29 May, Standard Chartered Bank and SMU jointly announced to the public the new SCB-SMU Innovation Centre. As part of this Innovation Centre, an SCB-SMU Innovation Lab (iLab) has been created on the 3rd floor of the SIS building.
Here is the joint Standard Chartered - SMU press release announcing this effort.
SIS undergratuate students, graduate students and faculty have started working with Standard Chartered banking experts on Innovation Lab projects over the past five months. Also, faculty and student teams from the other SMU schools (for example, teams from marketing and from economics) are starting to get involved in Innovation Lab projects as well.
The Innovation Lab provides truly exceptional opportunities for those SIS students who want to work at the intersection of information technology, the banking industry, and business issues.

This award will support our joint research program with the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) on unstructured information management - specifically, the use of text annotation and indexing to provide high-quality relation spotting, dossier creation, question answering, etc. for corporate information systems. In this program, students at SMU and CMU will be developing UIMA-based question-answering applications for an industry partner. The program will also support the development of a new SIS undergraduate elective on "Information Retrieval for Competitive Intelligence". This course aims to expose students to information retrieval, text mining and other aspects of unstructured information management, and show how these technology capabilities can enhance competitive intelligence. |

4. SAP Collaboration with SIS
Over the past year, SAP has been collaborating with SIS on educational initiatives. SAP experts actively participated in the SIS elective course on Enterprise Information Systems which was taught for the first time during Term 1 of the 2005 Academic Year (August - December 2005). Under the guidance of Mr. Simon Dale, Vice President & Chief Technology Officer for SAP Asia Pacific, SAP and SIS are exploring a number of other ways to collaborate on educational and research projects.

“The world needs more people who can take IT into business settings and use IT to drive business innovation. Our customers and we need people who can take all of the elements of IT and put them together in a way that makes it easy for the business to respond to the market.
I have been collaborating with the SMU School of Information Systems, and it is clear that they understand what is needed to adapt to today's constantly changing markets.”
