Since the dot.com market crash at the outset of this millennium, businesses around the world have continued to embrace IT emphatically and pervasively even as the pundits were predicting the demise of IT as a promising career for bright young minds preparing for university.

The conventional wisdom of the doomsday prophets has been proven wrong. In his widely acclaimed new book, “The World is Flat: A Brief History of the 21st Century,” author Thomas Friedman has come up with findings unnoticed by the popular press. He observes that IT innovations such as the internet, web browser, workflow software, open source software, out-sourcing, off-shoring, in-sourcing, supply chaining, and informing has transformed a workforce that is increasingly digital, mobile, personal and virtual into a global source of manpower. He notes that this new IT driven global manpower web has just added a large chunk from the new 3 billion success minded, prosperity focused, low cost, highly trained manpower from China, Eastern Europe and India into the mainstream of the global base of human capital. He concludes that businesses that have embraced this IT driven change have done well for themselves.

Move over naysayers. The dark days of IT are behind us. Globalized innovation firmly rooted in horizontal collaboration across all continents using the “connect and collaborate world” of Blogs, Instant messengers, Skype and other Open software is moving IT to newer heights. There is hardly any type of business that has not been affected by IT. Believers in the ability of IT to transform the future of their business have benefited extensively from it and the rest have paid a heavy price for not embracing these abilities soon enough.

Given this trend, it is imperative for future business leaders to know, adopt and leverage IT. Business leaders who do not realize that IT is a powerful engine of business advantage and value creation are destined to become dinosaurs. Training in both Business and IT is the best strategy for young minds aspiring to become global business leaders.
