- IT architecture, design and development skills
- Project management skills
- Learning-to-learn skills
- Collaboration (or teams) skills
- Change management skills for enterprise systems
- Skills for working across countries, cultures and borders

A distinctive feature of the SIS Undergraduate programme is the dual emphasis on the technical skills for the design and deployment of business information systems and on the business skills for analysing value, costs and risks of design and deployment alternatives. The programme also has a strong emphasis on IT project management and will provide students with in-depth experiences with the end-to-end process of defining, designing, and deploying solutions.
We interact with business, industry and government partners on an ongoing basis to deliver our vision of highly integrated and relevant learning experiences. Our external partners work with us to provide internships, to provide expertise to co-design our curriculum, and to provide student scholarships.
Graduate programmes
SIS has launced a PhD programme in Information Systems. A description of the programme is given here. The first PhD intake was in August 2006.
SIS has just launched a part-time Master of IT in Business (Financial Services) programme, with the first intake being admitted in August 2007. The details of the programme can be found here.
Research programmes SIS is actively pursuing topics of research interest to the ASEAN and Asian region and global community. The five main areas of SIS research are as follows:
- Data Management & Business Intelligence
- Information Security & Trust
- Software Systems, Architecture & Integration
- Intelligent Decision Support Systems
- IS Management.
SIS research shares the Carnegie Mellon philosophy that research should impact both theory and practice.
Through the PhD programme, SIS is producing researchers and educators who address deep technology challenges in real information systems that impact business processes or management, or who develop tools and methodologies to translate business goals to technology solutions. SIS had already established a research centre in 2004, and has been employing post-doctorates and Phd students from other universities to work with our faculty on projects and publications.
Professional programmes
SIS is identifying key continuing education programmes for IS and business technology professionals that will be delivered in the region. The first short course offering came from Carnegie Mellon’s Software Engineering Institute (SEI).
Private Sector and Public Sector involvement
SIS programmes are guided by the constantly evolving needs of business organisations. We constantly interact with industry users, service providers and R&D organisations to keep abreast of trends and developments related to both research and practise. We are also working closely with public sector agencies such as Singapore’s Infocomm Development Authority to define joint research initiatives based on public and private sector partnerships.
