Synopsis

Deeply involved with networking for over 45 years starting at Bell Labs and continuing in academia, Professor Farber has been a key player in many of the networking activities in the United States. He is called by many the "Grandfather of the Internet" due to his academic children who were among the "Fathers of the Internet".

In his lecture, Professor Farber will examine:

  • The impact that networking has had on the world for both technology & social perspectives
  • The current chaos on the Internet e.g. spams and other nasty pests and what can be done
  • Trade-offs across interconnections, privacy, government security and individual freedom

Plus panel discussion with Dr. Tan Geok Leng, Chief Technology Officer (IDA), and Professor Lawrence Wong, Executive Director (I2R).

About the speaker

Involved with networking for over 45 years, Professor Farber has provided extensive guidance and advice on areas of high performance computing, communications and IT. In the year 2000, he served as Chief Technologist at the U.S. Federal Communications Commission ( FCC ). He was the recipient of the 1995 ACM Sigcomm Award for life long contributions to the computer communications field. In 1996, he was awarded the prestigious John Scott Award for Inventions that have contributed to Humanity (previous recipients include Madam Curie, Thomas Edison and The Wright Brothers).
