Tomorrow's Business Leaders Get IT!

The SMU School of Information Systems (SIS)  is known for its innovative  BSc (Information Systems Management) curriculum that prepares students to  thrive on the challenges and opportunities  of today's globalised economy.  The programme sharpens the competitive edge of its graduates  and creates a  higher value-add that employers seek.  Because SMU SIS graduates are very good at integrating IT and Business,  they have a wider range of job opportunities and career paths than students who only study business or computer science/engineering.

A  comment from Mr LEE Kwok Cheong, Chairman, Infocomm Manpower Council best describes  the spirit of an SMU SIS student. Mr Lee was speaking about Miss Olivia CHIU, a SIS student who won Singapore's first iWhiz competition.  When Olivia entered the iWHIZ competition she was a freshman student, still in the very first semester of her first year. She was a JC student with no prior background in IT or software programming.  After Olivia won the first iWhiz competition by being the final survivor, Mr. LEE commented  “She is the most all-rounded person.  She is not the most technically gifted but she is able to leverage on the resources available to her.  And I think that is what we need for an IT winner.  Not just IT skills, but people skills, project management skills and the ability to work with people.”  It is a credit to Olivia that even as a freshman with no prior IT background, she had the combination of EQ and IQ that enabled her to "out-survive" her fellow contestents. And as she progresses through BSc (ISM) programme, her technology skills, her business skills, as well as her people management and soft skills, will only get better and better.  While Olivia was the champion, another SIS student, TAY Kang Xun, came in third in the competition.

This briefing session is a ‘touch point' to engage and inform those student applicants to the BSc (ISM) degree  who were fortunate enough to be admitted into the programme, to assist them in taking the affirmative action in an informed and confident manner.  Those who make this affirmation will  have a full, fulfilling and a delightful  life as an  SMU SIS student.
