Synopsis
Paul Dorey is a member of the senior IT executive of the global oil company BP. In this position, he and his colleagues face IT management challenges on a daily basis and over the past few years have rapidly built up a global IT capability. In his open lecture, he presents how a business based on physical assets has gained benefit from digital technology. Especially:
- The transformation of business processes through digitisation
- Sensory networks, RFID and imbeded digital technology
- Enabling global collaboration and knowledge sharing across 135 countries
- Introducing common off the shelf IT into the process control world of plants and refineries
- How all of these are kept secure against deliberate and targetted attack
About the speaker
Paul G. Dorey is Vice President of Digital Security & CISO for BP p.l.c., where he has functional leadership responsibility for IT Security, BCP and IT operational controls globally across the corporation. He has extensive experience of risk management approaches and emerging technologies, having established one of the first dedicated operational risk management functions in Europe and having over 15 years management experience in the field of information security.
Prior to joining BP, Dorey had a varied career as a financial services executive, academic and consultant. Following consultancy work for a number of governments he went on to set up strategy, security and risk management functions at Morgan Grenfell merchant bank and then Barclays Bank where he was Group Operational Risk Director, and a committee member of the bank's Group Risk Policy Committee.
During his time at Barclays he became Chief Executive of Barclays Electronic Commerce Holdings Inc. and went on to lead the Barclays team which help create the e-business bank joint venture, Identrus LLC, becoming a Board Director on formation of the joint venture company. He was also influential in the formation of UK banking e-business and security initiatives as chair of a key committee of the Association of Payments and Clearing Services.
He has produced a number of recognised texts in security and risk management in information technology and has provided briefings to UK, EU and US Governments and Regulators including expert testimony to US Congress on emerging trust services in electronic commerce.
He currently sits on the European Advisory Board for ISC2, the governance body for the CISSP qualification, and is an advisory to ISACA on CISM. He is a member of the Board of Managers of the Jericho Forum.
Dr Dorey has a BSc and PhD from the University of Southampton, UK.
