XML, short for Extensible Markup Language, is a well-recognized standard for data exchange between heterogeneous information systems. As more and more information is stored, exchanged, and presented in XML, data management issues for XML gradually emerge. A very important problem in XML data management is how we to store and efficiently query such hierarchical XML data, different from flat relational data.
In this talk, I will present an index-based query processing framework for XML, in particular, a novel index structure for XML and a family of join algorithms based on the index. Compared with existing work which processes XML queries by scanning the whole XML database, our index-based algorithms can leverage indexes in the database and avoid scanning data that does not contribute to the results of an XML query. As a result, our algorithms scale gracefully with the database sizes. Experiment results show that our new algorithms clearly outperform the existing ones, particularly for selective XML queries.
At the end of the talk, I will outline future research plans that extend and go beyond my current work.

Haifeng Jiang received the B. Eng. in Computer Science from Zhejiang University, Zhejiang, China in 1999. After that, he received the "Hong Kong Jockey Club Scholarship" and started his Ph.D. study in Computer Science at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Hong Kong, under the supervision of Dr. Hongjun Lu. He received the Ph.D. degree in Computer Science in 2004. From March to June 2002, he was a visiting student at the National University of Singapore (NUS), co-supervised by Dr. Beng Chin Ooi.
Haifeng Jiang is currently a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the IBM Almaden Research Center, San Jose, California, where he is a member of the Clio research group in the Content Management Department. His research interests can be summarized as (1) Storage design and query optimization for relational and XML databases; and (2) Schema mapping, data integration and transformation for heterogeneous information systems.
He has been actively publishing research papers in refereed journals and prestigious conferences. He has served as an internal or external reviewer for some leading academic journals and conferences. He is a member of the ACM. |
