Course requirements

A regular SMU undergraduate degree programme requires a student to complete 36 courses (including exemptions) along with an internship programme. The BSc (ISM) shares this basic structure, but also strongly recommends and expects the student to complete a 2nd major in a non-IS concentration in one of the five other schools of SMU. The 2nd major can also be in the School of Information Systems. Completion of the 2nd major typically requires an additional 2 to 4 courses.

The course structure for the BSc (ISM) degree is shown above. The 14 core ISM courses are shown in blue. The business oriented electives are shown in yellow. These include the essential six elective courses required, as well as the approximately four additional electives needed to complete a second major concentration outside of Information Systems. The remaining 16 courses, shown in green, comprise the "SMU common experience" for all students. These include SMU Foundation Courses (3), University Core Courses (6), General Education Courses (4), Global and Regional Studies Courses (2) plus Career Skills Courses (1 equivalent). In addition, SIS students complete an internship that enhances their skills and experience as Business-IT Professionals.

It is possible for students to complete the programme within 3 years. Most students choose to graduate in 3.5 to 4 years because of overseas exchanges, second majors, extended internships and other valuable experiences.

Second Major Options for BSc (ISM) Students

The ISM degree gives you an added dimension because you are cross-trained in both Business and IT. The second major strengthens your foundation and greatly enhances your employability and career prospects.

Students are required to do an IS project in their 3rd or 4th year. They are also required to do three IS depth electives. Depth electives can be taken from the 2nd year onward, subject to meeting pre-requisites.

IS Depth Electives

Electives provide students with the opportunity to explore IS technology and IS management issues in greater depth. New electives are being added on a regular basis.

See the list of IS Depth Electives.

At least one of the depth electives must come from the IS Technology category. For the other two depth electives, students can choose any combination from the IS Management category or the IS Technology category. Note that several courses from other SMU schools have also been approved as IS depth electives in the IS Management category.

Business-IT, 2nd major, and SMU core/foundation courses are taken in parallel to build the required skill mix for a Business-IT Professional
