The School of Information Systems is committed to develop IS students with specialized and practical skills, and in this case, a second major in Operations Management. We also welcome students from the LKC Business School who intend to also pursue this combination to join us. We hope to gather students with the same interest through this SIG, so that students can share experience, create synergy and form network. We believe that the IS/OM combination will provide our students the ability to perform wonderful things in their career in the future. |

I took OM as my second major due to my previous working experiences in warehouse.
It was really interesting when you get to see the stocks are processed from departments (i.e. inventory to packing) and finally to shipping department. I do not really like to sit and work in office and do daily similar jobs in fact. At least in OM , I can experience different job scopes, it is really a worth knowledge and experience to gain from it.
In today's high-tech economy, all OM required a system to operate, such as RFID, Supply Chain Management System, Inventory System, etc. These all systems are products of Information Technology. Hence, if our have a combined knowledge of IS and OM , we will be able to solve the problems in operations as soon as possible without any delay.

Firstly, I wanted to take OM as my 2nd major because almost every industry I can think of has a supply chain. From banking to oil & gas to medical, every kind of product and service involves good operations management in order to provide value to consumers. Taking OM as a 2 nd major thus dramatically increases the opportunities I have for my future career since I can venture into almost any kind of industry.
It is also a great combination along with IS since many of the optimization processes for OM make use of computing power to derive the results. Furthermore, the processes I have learnt from OM modules also allow me to have a bigger picture of how IS can be used for managing the supply chain. In a way, both of these majors compliment each other to give a more complete picture. |

I think IS-OM is a good combination because Technology is very prevalent in all business operations now. Technology enables better management and handling of operations. Having a good grasp of technical IT knowledge will allow us to value-add to business operations to make the whole business process from end-to-end more effective and efficient.

The rise of the Internet has brought with it both unprecedented promise and unprecedented peril. This is particular vital to a vulnerable supply chain (upwards or downwards). The supply chain is all about Operations Management. To better equip myself in knowing the backbone of the industry, I have decided to combine my degree with ISM and OM.
Knowing that this will provide me with the required skills to start off my career. |
