Notwithstanding the burning question of which second major to choose, the 38 participants who turned up for the talk: "Information Systems & Operations Management - A Perfect Fit? Or a Bad Marriage? “ had all their queries answered. Most importantly, they left with a convincing grasp of why "Information Systems & Operations Management" would be the ideal choice for their undergraduate program.

The talk held on 10th March 2006 was our IS/OM SIG's inaugural event - a joint effort by  Faculty-in-charge of IS/OM SIG, Practice Assistant Professor Michelle Cheong, and the founding members - Devin Marco, Joven Lai, Kelvin Phoon and Teng Wei Heng. This event officially marked the launch of the IS/OM SIG which had been established months ago. Distinguished guests gracing the event included the Dean of School of Information Systems, Steven Miller, and other faculty members from the SIS and LKCBS. With the aim of gathering all students with interests in the IS/OM combination, the first section of the talk was delivered by Prof. Michelle Cheong, who introduced the IS/OM SIG, its mission and objectives, and its membership drive. Next, Practice Associate Professor Leong Thin Yin presented information on the SMU IS/OM curriculum and also clarified any concerns and queries the participants might have had.

The highlight of the day was the talk by the invited industry guest speaker, Mr James Loo, COO of Y3 Technologies, who exposed us to the real life examples of IS/OM in practice. The most interesting concept illustrated was the paradigm shift that technology would bring to the logistics sector. Logistics companies should no longer seek ways merely to improve on the speed, reliability, convenience and customization of their operations. Market demands have changed drastically in the past few years and now customers yearn for logistics solutions that can allow them to add value to their business processes.

Y3 Technologies was alert enough to respond to such customers’ needs and utilized technology as a tool to create a niche market for itself. Its parent company, YCH Group, started the Zero Inventory Management concept, which replaced the banks’ role of holding physical goods stored in the warehouses as collateral.

Besides that, the impressive logistics business solutions showcased in a case study on Motorola Singapore left our jaws hanging. Using their knowledge management system, Y3 Technologies turned the Motorola headquarters in Singapore into an information hub. The hub collects and consolidates all orders from worldwide Motorola branches. After which, the system locates the nearest warehouse and disseminates the packed orders to the nearest demand location. The clever use of technology retained the usefulness of the headquarters in Singapore, hence preventing it from relocating elsewhere.

The participants of the talk definitely gained more insights into the mysterious world of IS/OM. Most, if not all of the participants left the seminar room feeling rewarded for their time.
